Nevada Medicaid:
Program Description: Nevada’s Personal Care Services (PCS) program offers support to residents in need of assistance to maintain their independence at home due to chronic health conditions or disabilities. This program enables eligible individuals to receive in-home services for activities such as daily living, meal preparation, housekeeping, and mobility, thereby allowing them to avoid nursing home placement and continue living in their own homes.
Within the PCS program, there is an option known as Self-Directed Care, where participants act as the employer of their chosen caregiver. They have the freedom to select, train, supervise, and, if necessary, terminate their caregiver, provided the caregiver meets the necessary qualifications. The Intermediary Service Organization (ISO) takes care of budget-related matters. Self-Directed Care is available statewide, offering flexibility not only in choosing a caregiver but also in determining when and how care is provided. While family members like siblings and adult children can be employed as caregivers, those with legal responsibility for the care recipient cannot be compensated. Spouses and other Legally Responsible Individuals (LRIs) fall into this category and are not eligible for payment through this program.
An alternative to Self-Directed Care is Provider Agency Care, which is available in areas with provider agencies. Under this option, individuals select an agency to provide care, with the agency acting as the employer.
The PCS program falls under the administration of the Nevada Medicaid program. To determine eligibility for this program, please contact our office or Nevada Medicaid for further information.

The Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program is a vital initiative provided by the Veterans Administration (VA) to support elderly caregivers who are taking care of veterans. This program is specifically designed to address the challenges and stresses associated with providing personal care for veterans, including feeding and bathing, which can be physically demanding and time-consuming for caregivers.
The main goal of this program is to ease the burden on caregivers, as their responsibilities often leave them with limited time to address their own needs. It recognizes that maintaining the caregiver’s well-being is crucial for the overall well-being of both the caregiver and the veteran they are caring for.
Key features of the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program include:
- Access to Home Health Aides: Through this program, caregivers can access the services of a home health aide. These aides are trained to provide personal care to veterans in the comfort of their own homes.
- Regular Scheduling: The program arranges for home health aides to visit the caregiver’s home on a regular and predetermined schedule. This consistency ensures that caregivers can plan around these visits, providing them with some respite.
- Respite for Caregivers: By having a trained home health aide attend to the veteran’s personal care needs, caregivers have the opportunity to take a break and focus on their own well-being. This respite is essential in helping caregivers recharge physically and emotionally.
- Support for Caregiver Health: The program encourages caregivers to take care of themselves, emphasizing that their own health and well-being are crucial to providing effective care to the veteran. Caring for oneself ensures that caregivers can continue to provide quality care to the veterans they serve.
- Local VA Medical Center Coordination: The local VA medical center plays a central role in coordinating and facilitating these services. Caregivers can reach out to the VA center for assistance in setting up home health aide services and getting the support they need.
In summary, the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program provided by the VA recognizes the immense challenges that elderly caregivers face when caring for veterans. By offering access to trained professionals and respite care, it aims to alleviate some of the physical and emotional burdens on caregivers, allowing them to better care for themselves and the veterans they serve. This program is a valuable resource in promoting the well-being of both caregivers and veterans. To see what programs your veteran might qualify for, please contact us today to discuss, or contact the Veterans Administration directly.
