Nevada Medicaid
Program Description: Nevada’s Personal Care Services (PCS) program offers support to residents in need of assistance to maintain their independence at home due to chronic health conditions or disabilities. This program enables eligible individuals to receive in-home services for activities such as daily living, meal preparation, housekeeping, and mobility, thereby allowing them to avoid nursing home placement and continue living in their own homes.
Within the PCS program, there is an option known as Self-Directed Care, where participants act as the employer of their chosen caregiver. They have the freedom to select, train, supervise, and, if necessary, terminate their caregiver, provided the caregiver meets the necessary qualifications. The Intermediary Service Organization (ISO) takes care of budget-related matters. Self-Directed Care is available statewide, offering flexibility not only in choosing a caregiver but also in determining when and how care is provided. While family members like siblings and adult children can be employed as caregivers, those with legal responsibility for the care recipient cannot be compensated. Spouses and other Legally Responsible Individuals (LRIs) fall into this category and are not eligible for payment through this program.
An alternative to Self-Directed Care is Provider Agency Care, which is available in areas with provider agencies. Under this option, individuals select an agency to provide care, with the agency acting as the employer.
